Run Your Own Race

Run Your Own Race

“Run Your Own Race.”

Four little words. Four syllables shared with me by other runners.

"Run your own race." Truly generous encouragement and advice.

"Run your own race," begins the mantra I focus on whether running a race or performing daily activities.

Run your own race
Find your own pace
Run your own race
Find your own pace

As my races have lengthened in miles the mantra has improved to help me reach the finish line.

Run your own race
Find your own pace
You are beautiful
You are strong
You can do this
All day long
Run your own race...

Words so powerful in their simplicity. And about much more than running.

Today my race was a 10k run. For me it lasted 1 hour and 24 minutes. The longer race began when I got home. That Long Race isn’t about speed or running, it’s about helping my body recover: stretch and foam roll; eat a healthy meal; drink plenty of water; get a good night’s sleep. I want the Long Race to last another 60 years.

The Long Race is the daily challenge to be a little bit stronger and healthier than the day before. It’s a race where the desire to be fit works to keep ahead of the desire to indulge in poor eating habits and unhealthy behaviors. Sometime fit habits may only be an inch or two ahead of the unhealthy impulses; occasionally they fall behind. But that's just part of the landscape of the Long Race. Never give up on the Long Race. And bet on yourself to finish strong and healthy.

Run your own race.
