Runner's World "40 Days of Awesome"
In the November 2017 issue of Runner's World magazine I ran across a notice about the "40 Days of Awesome" challenge. The goal is to run 1 mile every day between Thanksgiving 2017 and New Year's Day 2018. Before I gave myself a chance to think about all the reasons why I shouldn't do it, I joined the RW Run Streak Facebook group and sealed the deal by ordering the T-shirt .
I've been picking up issues of Runner's World from the newsstand every month for the past couple of years and reading them cover-to-cover. It's been ages since I ran with any regularity, and most of the time I complained about not liking to run.
There's something about running, however, that just won't let go of me.
This challenge, combined with the camaraderie of other "streakers" in the group, has been inspiring, motivating, enriching and just flat-out fun! In another post (Not Just SMART Goals - SoSMART goals) I wrote about how adding social support to SMART goals adds motivation and increases the opportunity for success. I've had the chance to experience this phenomena first-hand with this challenge.
From the first day, after every run I colored in the little white stick runners on the shirt. For me, that bit of crafting gave me a way to bring my love for making things into my fitness activity. It brought a sense of balance that I'm always trying to achieve. The colorful stick runners were a hit, and I was thrilled when Runner's World contacted me for an interview for their website.
With just 5 days left to go in this challenge, I know I'll keep running even after New Year's Day. I'm still deciding on the next challenge... stay tuned!
