That's the Way (Uh Huh Uh Huh!)
Inspiration. My go-to songs to inspire a vigorous walk are heavy-hitting, drum-pounding tunes like Twilight Zone (Golden Earring), Born to Be Wild (Steppenwolf), and Word Up! (Korn).
So it came as a bit of a surprise to me when I rediscovered - or perhaps discovered for the first time - disco. Yeah, that's right. Disco Turned My World Upside Down. Of course I heard disco music in the late 70s, early 80s. I watched Flashdance on the big screen in 1983 and for months afterwards I walked around wearing leg warmers and a wide-neck sweatshirt slipped ever-so-sexily down one shoulder. No one knew what MacArthur Park was about, but Donna Summer could sure belt out a tune!
In those days I was way too cool for disco. Then last summer I was looking for good step aerobics music, and I realized that a lot of the lists had disco songs. So I pulled up one disco song I remembered, Y.M.C.A., and Whoops! Upside the Head! It rang my bell and I fell straight into Funkytown. Could It Be Magic? Must be, because now I am the happy owner of Pure Disco volumes 1, 2 and 3.
At first I only played my new tunes indoors, in my workout room, with the door closed (I mean, I do have my pride to consider). But before long I Turned the Beat Around and my disco sounds got interfiled with my "working outdoors" playlist of classic rock. Pity my poor neighbors when I started Shake Shake Shaking My Booty while I shoveled, hammered and sawed.
To inspire you Get Up and Boogie, here's one of my playlists (disco plus other favs) for a 49-minute step/aerobic workout:
- Y.M.C.A. (136 bpm)
- That's the Way (I Like It) (112 bpm)
- School's Out - Alice Cooper (136 bpm)
- I Will Survive (120 bpm)
- Eat It - Weird Al Yankovic's parody of Beat It (152 bpm)
- I Love the Nightlife (128 bpm)
- (Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty (112 bpm)
- Walk Like an Egyptian (112 bpm)
- Macho Man (136 bpm)
- Flashdance (What a Feeling) (128 bpm)
- Last Dance (128 bpm)
- Fame (136 bpm)
- Jive Talking (108 bpm)
- Dancing Queen - The Mama Mia version (100 bpm)
Music has the magic to keep me moving, which is so critical to maintaining weight loss. Workout music is my Everlasting Love, and to the Last Dance, I Will Survive.
So go forth, Dancing Queens, you are all Hot Stuff! Play That Funky Music and shake your own groove thing!
